Helping Oyster Farmers Manage Toxin Risk

NeogenTM PST (Paralytic Shellfish Toxin) Kit validated and implemented as part of proactive testing program.

The toxin is produced by some naturally occurring algae, and eating seafood contaminated with the toxin can cause Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP). Workshops for oyster farmers, to provide training and accreditation in the use of the Neogen kit, commenced in Tasmania in January 2018, funded by a SafeFish-DAWR grant. Implementing the testing procedures is expected to significantly reduce the incidence of PSP, and have beneficial economic and brand protection impact for the industry.
