A robust sanitation verification program is at the heart of any ATP food safety program. Progressive, proactive facilities develop Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOP) that formalize their cleaning and sanitation test process.
Validation and verification of the facility’s SSOP can be accomplished through a robust hygiene monitoring program. To help with this, Neogen® offers a range of ATP test kits and products to detect the amount of residue or organic matter, including bacteria, yeast and mould, left on a surface or in rinse water after cleaning.
Neogen’s ATP testing system leads the industry and provides a near-instant measurement of organic material left on a surface. Hygiene swab tests, such as protein swabs can also provide a relatively quick measurement of general cleaning by reporting the amount of protein left on the surface. While ATP test systems report a numeric value, protein detection swabs change colour in the presence of proteins.
Another important indicator of SSOP efficacy is the relative presence of microorganisms on the surface. While also affected by the cleaning portion of the SSOP, this marker relates more closely to the efficacy of the sanitizer.

NSF International Study: A comparison of commercial ATP sanitation validation systems under real-world conditions.
Summary of NSF International Study.
AccuClean Advanced delivers industry-leading speed and sensitivity for determining the cleanliness of food contact surfaces and equipment through residual protein detection. AccuClean Advanced is a simple, 10-second visual test that reveals detected protein residue through an easy-to-interpret colour change. With a detection limit of 10 μg protein per sample, the ATP test provides rapid, sensitive, reliable results.
AccuPoint Advanced Sanitation Verification System measures the ATP collected from food contact surfaces or rinse water samples as an indication of the cleanliness of the surface or purity of the rinse water
